Holy Crap! Moon Phase

Jon in full camo, itching to get back into the turkey woods after an exciting morning.

I had to leave late at night (9:00PM) on Wednesday to go for my annual spring turkey hunt.  While I rode in the passenger seat crossing Arizona, I saw 20-30 elk milling around the side of the road.  Of those, four trotted across the road in front of us.  I don’t know why it never occurred to me before and I have never purported myself to be the most experienced guy in the turkey woods, but this seems to me like it may be one of the most important bits of information that a beginning hunter needs to understand.  A full moon turning into a waning gibbous is the best time to hunt.  We got to our neck of the woods at 4:00AM and set up the tent to claim the best camping spot in the area.  At very  first light my buddy heard a gobble.  The next three days the gobbling was unprecedented.

Last year I didn’t hear one gobble.  I didn’t see any footprints, I know the turkeys were there, but they certainly weren’t active.  A waxing gibbous is a terrible time to hunt.  The rest of the time is a mix of activity that isn’t as cut and dry. Due to the short time that I have for turkey hunting and scouting, it is rare that I kill a bird, but the odds just got better for me I think.

Please comment on my posts and let me know what you want to know about turkey hunting. I really like turkey hunting and think about it less then only one other thing. If you can't figure out what that other thing is, then I am not going to tell you;) This blog is no B.S., highly informative, and dedicated to getting you out and turkey hunting with as little time and effort as possible. I have started at the beginning and gone all the way to the end of this hobby without anyone, but my dad to help me. I learned how to turkey hunt from doing it and reading the internet. This sport is fun, tough and full of beautiful women. Just kidding about the women part, I have seen a total of two women in the turkey woods. If you are a woman and are reading this good for you. We need more of you out there. The whole point of my blog is to get all of you men, women and children to get out in the wild, love it and build a conservation ethic. For me putting myself back into the ecosystem is the number one thing that makes me want to care for it. I hope you will want that too if you don't already. Let me know how I can help!!

I found out something interesting today …

You know how geese fly in a V-shaped formation?

And how one side of the V is often longer than the other side?

Well, I found out why …

There are more geese on the long side.
