How a Shotgun Works

A shotgun is a specialized weapon made to spread shot out over an area.  This is different than a rifle.  A rifle shoots one big bullet instead of a payload of many shot pieces.  The way a shotgun accomplishes this is by using a different kind of cartridge called a shotshell.  The firing pin on the shotgun hits the primer which ignites the gun powder.  The gun powder builds up an enormous amount of pressurized gasses that push the wad with the shot in the shot cup through the gun barrel.  Once outside the barrel the wad spreads out in the air and the shot continues flying through the air in a deadly cloud of lead that spreads out the farther it gets from the guns barrel.  The advantage in this is that the target is hit with many smaller projectiles carrying a huge amount of force over a larger area.  The disadvantage is that the relatively smaller pieces of shot loose their energy at a much shorter distance than a rifle bullet.  Shotguns are used for turkey hunting because turkeys are so tough and have such small vitals that they often die far away from where they are shot when hit with a single bullet.  But if you hit them in the head with a cloud of lead shot, you can expect a quick clean kill.

Please comment on my posts and let me know what you want to know about turkey hunting. I really like turkey hunting and think about it less then only one other thing. If you can't figure out what that other thing is, then I am not going to tell you;) This blog is no B.S., highly informative, and dedicated to getting you out and turkey hunting with as little time and effort as possible. I have started at the beginning and gone all the way to the end of this hobby without anyone, but my dad to help me. I learned how to turkey hunt from doing it and reading the internet. This sport is fun, tough and full of beautiful women. Just kidding about the women part, I have seen a total of two women in the turkey woods. If you are a woman and are reading this good for you. We need more of you out there. The whole point of my blog is to get all of you men, women and children to get out in the wild, love it and build a conservation ethic. For me putting myself back into the ecosystem is the number one thing that makes me want to care for it. I hope you will want that too if you don't already. Let me know how I can help!!

  1. It’s interesting how the shell looks just like an upside down engine cylinder where the primer is the spark plug and the gunpowder is the fuel. Except, if your engine was like this, then you’d start it and it would blow up once and then you’d go nowhere.
